What is attachment in romantic relationships?

Why do we always argue about the same thing? Attachment has a lot to do with it

There are couples who love each other but they live in a constant loop of misunderstandings, distance and repetitive discussions. One needs more closeness, the other gets overwhelmed. One insists on talking, the other closes down. And both end up feeling lonely within the relationship. If it sounds to you, it's no coincidence. Many times, behind these patterns is attachment.

What is attachment in romantic relationships?

Attachment is how we have learned to connect emotionally with others from our first relationships. Although it originates from childhood, it remains very present in our adult relationships, especially with our partners. It's not something conscious or chosen. It's an automatic way to seek closeness, manage fear of rejection or abandonment and respond to conflict. That's why, many discussions have so much to do with "what happens," but with how everyone lives what happens.

Styles of attachment to partners

Attachment styles refer to emotional and relational responses that are activated when the bond feels threatened or insecure. These behaviours can vary according to the moment and situation. Security in attachment promotes a stable and respectful connection. In the relationship of a partner it translates into being able to express what is felt clearly, to ask for support without fear, to respect another's space without interpreting it as rejection and to seek solutions rather than entering into confrontational dynamics. The anxiety in attachment appears when the fear of losing the bond or of not being sufficient. It often manifests as an intense need for closeness or response, tendency to overinterpret behaviours of the partner, hypervigilance towards possible signals of distance and urgency to resolve or clarify situations. Avoidance in attachment usually activates when conflict or emotional intensity becomes difficult to manage. It may be reflected in the tendency to avoid emotional conversations, seeking distance in the face of discomfort, difficulty in expressing emotional needs, and tendency to disconnect or withdraw.

The cycle that engulfs many couples

A very common pattern is the interplay between anxiety and avoidant behaviour. It usually develops as: a person wants to talk, clarify, get closer and the other person feels overwhelmed and takes distance. The more one withdraws, the more the other insists and the more the other insists, the more the other closes off. This cycle does not occur because one does it better or worse, but because both are trying to manage what they feel in the only way they know at that time. The result of this cycle is frustration, misunderstanding and feeling that you are not seen by the partner. To this is added a persistent feeling that emotional needs are not being met, difficulties in expressing what is felt for fear of worsening the conflict, problems in trusting or relaxing in the relationship and the perception of a mismatch in the way of emotionally engaging.

Can you change this?

Yes. And this point is key. Attachment is not a fixed label or a condemnation. It is a learned behaviour pattern, and as such, it can be reviewed, understood and transformed. When a couple starts to understand what is behind their reactions, blame decreases, empathy increases and space opens up for more authentic communication.

How Can Couples Therapy Help?

It addresses how each person gets emotionally activated, what they really need, what patterns exist, why they repeat and how to communicate without entering into the same loop. It's about not just talking less but understanding the dynamics that are trapping the couple and learning how to get out of them as a team.

If this looks familiar...

It's perhaps not that the relationship's missing, but that there are dynamics that need to be understood and worked out. At our centre of psychology we can join you in this process, helping to transform your way of interrelation and create a safer, more conscious and more satisfying space.
